Centre South Development to Reshape Charlotte's South End Skyline
A massive new development called Centre South is planned for Charlotte's South End, with promises to bring density, affordable housing, and new towers that will alter the city's skyline. The project is expected to break ground in early 2026 at the crossroads of Uptown, South End, and Dilworth.
"It's a significant densification on South Boulevard," said James LaBar with Charlotte Center City Partners.
The development was designed to respect the adjacent Dilworth neighborhood while gradually increasing density and height closer to Uptown. The design steps down or tapers toward the residential neighborhood while building density and height toward the urban core.
The first phase calls for 329 apartments, with 20% of them reserved for affordable housing.
"That's a really important piece for Center City and South End, to be inclusive and bring together mixed-income neighborhoods," LaBar explained.
By 2028, the plans will expand to include office space, retail, a hotel, and additional residential housing.
Some neighbors see the project as a potential step toward easing Charlotte's housing pressures. "Personally, I am very much in favor of increasing housing supply. That's how you keep it affordable," said South End resident Donald Haney.
From skyline-shaping towers to affordable apartments, developers and city leaders are framing Centre South as more than just a project. It is part of Charlotte's future as a denser, more inclusive urban center.
The development joins a wave of construction activity across Charlotte's core, including the renovation of 400 South Tryon into approximately 399 apartments with hotel and retail space, and the ongoing transformation of the South End light rail corridor.
